The serene passing by of the river banks is occasionally interrupted by a lock.
This provides a good contrast to drifting down the canal by requiring some quite intense physical labour – starting with the need to open the paddles with a windlass in order to let the water in or out.
Last time I went on a boating holiday, there were lock masters to do this kind of thing for me – phew! This is hard work!
